Tucked away in the heart of Cowbridge is one of our favourite places in the Vale. The Old Hall Gardens is a beautifully maintained green space, offering a tranquil retreat for locals and visitors alike. The Physic Garden is next to it, another beautiful Cowbridge space.
Managed by a wonderful group of dedicated volunteers from the Cowbridge Charter Trust (CCT) in partnership with the Vale of Glamorgan Council, this historic garden is not only a place of beauty but also a haven for wildlife and biodiversity.
A Space for Nature and Community
The gardens have been thoughtfully developed with an emphasis on conservation, sustainability, and community involvement. With a variety of distinct areas, from wildflower meadows to story spaces for children, Old Hall Gardens offers something for everyone.
Exploring the Gardens
Each section of the gardens has been designed with a purpose – whether to attract pollinators, provide habitats for birds and insects, or simply offer a peaceful space to unwind.
The Habitat Area
A sanctuary for wildlife, this space is filled with bird feeders, nest boxes, and natural shelters that support insects, frogs, and birds. Climbing plants and ivy towers create green corridors, ensuring year-round interest and biodiversity.
Fernery and Woodland Walk
A shaded haven where ferns thrive, offering contrast to the vibrant flower borders. Spring bulbs bring bursts of colour beneath the mature trees.
Wildflower Meadow and Herbaceous Borders
Designed to attract bees, butterflies, and moths, this area features traditional hay meadow planting with native species such as cowslips, fritillaries, ox-eye daisies, and orchids.
The Dragon Border
This unique feature, including the Sleeping Dragon sculpture, was created in memory of a Cowbridge family’s son. Willow caves and sculptural plants add a magical touch, making it a favourite spot for children.
Lavender Border and Rampart Walk
The aromatic lavender is a magnet for bees, while seasonal plantings of daffodils and pasque flowers enhance the area with vibrant colour.
A Place for Learning and Relaxation
Beyond its natural beauty, Old Hall Gardens serves as a hub for community learning and enjoyment.
Library Borders and Story Space
Installed with the support of a Biffa Award, this inviting area encourages storytelling and reading sessions, particularly for children.
Wisteria Walk
Featuring a historic wisteria, carefully pruned and supported by a handcrafted Welsh green oak pergola, this space bursts into stunning bloom every spring.
Courtyard and Façade Terrace
A beautifully restored Georgian façade with vibrant summer bedding plants, benches, and picnic tables – ideal for socialising and relaxation.
The Pond and Ancient Yew Tree Lawn
Supporting diverse aquatic life, the pond is home to frogs, dragonflies, and water lilies, while the ancient yew and cypress trees add a sense of timeless grandeur.
Medieval Wall Base
This historic feature, left uncovered to reveal its original structure, is bordered by thyme and summer perennials, providing a fragrant and visually striking space.
Get Involved
The Old Hall Gardens Work Party meets every Thursday from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm, and volunteers of all abilities are welcome. Whether you have a passion for gardening, conservation, or simply want to enjoy the company of like-minded individuals, there’s a role for everyone. Experts in biodiversity and horticulture are often on hand, making this a great opportunity to learn new skills.
