There’s something quite special about a proper village shop – that welcoming blend of convenience, community spirit and genuine friendliness that seems harder to find these days. We especially love celebrating them in Vale Life and that’s certainly been the case in our most recent issue.

In Wick, however, The Village Shop is proving that the traditional model is very much alive and thriving. Run by Kristian and Jonathan, the shop has quickly become the beating heart of the village – a place where locals not only pick up their essentials but catch up with neighbours, enjoy a coffee, and support Welsh producers all at the same time.

“Our goal from day one,” says Kris, “was to create a shop that felt like part of the community – somewhere people genuinely enjoy visiting, not just a place to grab a pint of milk.”

Inside, the shelves are brimming with everyday staples and local treasures alike, from fresh fruit and vegetables, locally sourced meats and dairy, to cakes, confectionery, groceries and newspapers. Welsh produce features proudly, with farm-fresh eggs from Tyn-y-Caeau Farm, Llandow, arriving several times a week and organic bread and pastries from Ground Bakery delivered every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.

“We’ve been blown away by the support,” adds Jon. “Those first few weeks were incredible – the fresh produce was literally flying off the shelves. The village has really taken us to heart.”

Coffee and conversation
At the heart of the shop is The Nook, its cosy and increasingly popular coffee spot. Already a firm favourite with locals, it’s the perfect place to pause and enjoy a freshly brewed coffee and a pastry straight from the oven. With its friendly atmosphere and the irresistible aroma of freshly baked bread, it’s no surprise that it’s fast becoming one of Wick’s favourite meeting places.

“We wanted somewhere for people to slow down and chat,” says Kris. “A village needs that – somewhere that brings people together. The Nook has turned into exactly that, and we love seeing the same friendly faces every morning.”

Community at the core
Kris and Jon are passionate about keeping The Village Shop at the heart of village life. Their commitment to excellent service, community support and championing local suppliers has been warmly received – and it’s clear that the people of Wick have embraced their vision wholeheartedly. “Community is everything,” says Jon.

“Whether it’s offering home delivery when someone can’t get out, or helping to promote local producers, it all adds up to keeping Wick connected.”

So, whether you’re popping in for your morning paper, a loaf of artisan bread, or simply a coffee with friends, The Village Shop in Wick offers a warm welcome and a genuine sense of belonging.
