Kitchenology is set to become a must-visit for anyone looking to blend style, function, and a dash of inspiration into their home.
We chatted to owner James Christian Orchard about how Kitchenology was settling in to its new home in Penarth.
James, let’s start at the beginning. Kitchenology hasn’t always been Kitchenology, has it?
That’s right. The business started life as Radiocraft, back in Canton, Cardiff, in 1949. My family owned and ran it for decades, originally focusing on TVs, audio, and appliances. Over the years, I began to see that our customers wanted more than just products – they wanted complete kitchen and home solutions. That’s when we began evolving into what is now Kitchenology.
You had quite a loyal following in Canton. Was it difficult to move?
In some ways, yes. Canton was home for a long time, and the relationships we built there meant a lot to me. But the exciting part is that so many of those customers have stayed with us. We also had a short stint in Ludlow Street in Penarth which we quickly outgrew. We’ve literally seen familiar faces walk through the door here in Penarth, and that’s hugely rewarding.
How has Penarth welcomed you?
Honestly, I couldn’t have asked for better. From the day we opened our Windsor Road showroom, local businesses and residents have been incredibly warm and supportive. I feel genuinely at home here. There’s a wonderful community spirit in Penarth – it’s the kind of place where people want you to succeed.
What sets Kitchenology apart from other kitchen showrooms?
We’re not just about selling kitchens; we’re about creating experiences. We have created a kitchen showroom on the first floor which we are really proud of and which shows off our products at their best. We offer personalised design services, top-quality brands, and something we’re really excited about – cookery demonstrations right here in the showroom. We want people to see appliances in action, taste the results, and leave feeling inspired.
What is the process? How would customers get the ball rolling?
We like to keep things simple – visit our showroom, call us out for a free survey and design, place your order, kitchen and appliances installed.
Tell us about your cookery demos…
The idea is to make shopping for a kitchen more interactive and enjoyable. We’ll be working with chefs and home cooks to demonstrate everything from perfecting bread in a steam oven to making a Sunday roast in a combination oven. It’s fun, it’s informative, and it helps customers make confident decisions about their appliances.
Which brands do you work with?
We’re proud to offer a mix of premium and classic brands – Nobilia, Miele, Neff, Siemens, Bosch, and Ashley Ann, to name a few. Whether a customer wants sleek German minimalism or timeless British craftsmanship, we can make it happen.
Can customers just buy appliances?
Absolutely. We can offer appliances for every room in the home, from cooking, laundry, small appliances, dishwashers, floorcare, refrigeration, TV and entertainment, and home and outdoor. We have everything covered.
Do you have any customer feedback that sticks in your mind?
Absolutely. One of my favourites came from one customer, who said: “Excellent service, needed a new hob and it was fitted the next day – staff very helpful and friendly.” Another delighted client said: “James visited mum’s house. Arranged purchase, delivery and installation in double-quick time. Local service at its very best.” Feedback like that makes the hard work worthwhile.
That must be rewarding…
It really is. We put a lot of effort into making sure customers feel looked after from the first conversation to the final installation. Another summed it up perfectly when he wrote: “The staff were pleasant, helpful and obliging. Installation done with great care. Very happy indeed.” That’s exactly what we aim for – happiness and peace of mind.
How do you see Kitchenology’s role in the Penarth community?
I’d like us to be more than just a store. I want us to be a place people enjoy visiting, whether they’re shopping for a kitchen or just popping in for a demo. We’re already exploring partnerships with other local independents and looking at ways to host community events.
We are situated next door to the popular women’s fashion boutique, En Vogue and a short walk from the new, equally popular, Hickman’s Bar and Restaurant.
Do you miss anything about Canton?
I miss seeing the old shop every day, but the truth is, moving here has been energising. The customers who followed us are part of the journey, and now we’re making new friends and clients too. It feels like the best of both worlds.
What’s next for Kitchenology?
We’ll keep expanding our kitchen ranges, bringing in new innovations, and, of course, ramping up our programme of cookery events. My goal is to keep the experience fresh and enjoyable – because when people are excited about their homes, they’re excited about their lives.
Do you partner with any other local companies in Cardiff and the Vale?
Yes, we do. We have a long standing relationship with Cardiff Marble. They are a great company and very highly regarded. They have supplied a lot of the showroom worktops for us and everyone loves their product.
Finally, if you had to sum up your message to the people of Penarth?
Thank you – for the welcome, the trust, and the enthusiasm. We’re here to bring your kitchen dreams to life, and I can’t wait to meet more of you, whether you’re old friends from Canton or new faces from just around the corner.

James’s Top Kitchen Design Tips
Plan for how you live, not just how it looks.
Think about your daily habits – where you make coffee, how you prepare meals, where the kids do homework. A beautiful kitchen that doesn’t suit your lifestyle won’t feel right.
Lighting is everything.
Layer your lighting – task lights for cooking, ambient lighting for mood, and accent lights to highlight features. The right light can make even the smallest kitchen feel bigger and warmer.
Don’t scrimp on storage.
Well-planned cupboards, pull-outs, and hidden drawers keep clutter off the worktops and make a kitchen feel calm and ordered.
Test appliances before you buy.
That’s where our cookery demos come in – you get to see how an oven bakes or a hob boils before you commit.
Blend timeless design with a personal twist.
Neutral tones and classic finishes age well, but adding a bold splashback, a pop of colour, or a statement handle keeps your kitchen uniquely yours.
From a family business in Canton to a fresh chapter in Penarth, James Orchard is proving that a warm welcome and a personal touch can turn a high street showroom into a community hub.
