There are restaurants you plan to visit for years, and then there are the ones you finally step into on a freezing February night and immediately wonder what took you so long. Junoon (which means ‘passion’ incidentally), on Talbot Road, Talbot Green, is firmly the latter. We arrived hungry, curious, and completely unprepared for how quickly the place would win us over.

The warmth hits before the food does – soft light, a low hum of conversation, and an easy confidence in the room. It’s stylish without trying too hard, modern but inviting, the kind of dining room where cold fingers thaw fast. And the welcome is exactly what you hope for: relaxed, friendly, and quietly proud.

Start with smokiness and spice
We came to explore properly, so we ordered widely. The starters landed like a statement of intent – kebab platter, green platter, garlic chilli tiger prawns – filling the table with colour and aroma.

The prawns were the undeniable show-offs: plump and fresh, slicked in a sauce that hits with a mild heat first, flavour second, and then refuses to let go. You taste the sea, then the warmth, then you reach back for another without hesitation.

Around them, a fine selection of perfectly grilled meats brought that deep tandoor perfume you can’t fake – the result of patience, marinades, and a kitchen that understands time as an ingredient.

The comfort dishes – done right!

The main event(s)
Butter chicken arrived like a warm blanket – silky, rich, the sort of dish you keep eating long after you said you’d stop.

Kosha mangsho, the darker, moodier counterpart, was slow-cooked, caramelised, layered – the kind of curry that feels like it’s been tended to all day and rewards every minute of it.

And then there were the naans…
Peshwari, sweet and nutty, and garlic keema, gloriously indulgent. Tools, technically – but really just excuses to keep drawing those sauces back toward you.

By this point, the table was joyful chaos: plates shifting, cutlery clinking, and the kind of comfortable silence that only really happens when everyone is completely absorbed in what they’re eating.

A sweet finish
Dessert is often where places slip into autopilot. Not here.

The Ras Malai was soft, milky and familiar – but the Mango Brûlée was the surprise. Crisp top, bright and tropical underneath, a little wink from the kitchen that says they’re more versatile than you might think.

A story that sums it up perfectly
Mid-meal, we chatted with the diners next to us – friendly, funny, clearly at home. They casually mentioned they were Junoon’s very first customers and have returned regularly ever since. Same table. Same dishes. Same order. The owner told us, amused, that he barely needs menus for them; he puts the order through the moment they walk in.

You don’t get loyalty like that unless you’re doing something right, consistently.

Local touches and good service
Junoon’s drinks list includes beers, lagers, spirits and soft drinks, but a standout is their proudly stocked Hensol Gin – a collaboration with the local distillery we’ve featured in Vale Life many times. A thoughtful, local touch.

Service throughout the evening was excellent: warm, attentive, never overbearing. The kind that makes you feel looked after without feeling managed.

Practicalities
Parking is easy enough in the evenings with spaces along both sides of the road.

There’s also a private dining space upstairs – cosy, welcoming, ideal for small events or group bookings, and used on busier nights.

Why it works
Junoon isn’t trying to reinvent Indian food. It’s doing something harder – respecting it. Good ingredients, real technique, and hospitality that feels genuine. You walk out warm, full, and already thinking about what you’d order next time. Because there will be a next time.

Arrive hungry. Bring friends. Order more than you think you should. Junoon has earned its reputation the honest way – one dish at a time.”
