Readers of Vale Life will know we’re fans of Penny Farthing. We love their chicken livers (a winter dish that we stroppily complain isn’s available all year ’round – yes, they’re that good), and their triple cooked chips that taste divine. Anyway, you get the picture…
Late June sees us rock up again to one of their ‘special evenings’ and we weren’t disappointed. Actually, that’s not quite true. We’ll get to that.
Six courses in all and they started with a lovely pea soup which was spot on. Tuna Carpaccio was delicious and the lamb and dauphinoise potatoes was excellent. Portions were just right. All in all, an excellent evening let down by one thing… lighting.
We all love to take a few snaps these days to post on our social media pages but if you’re in the middle section, where the ambience is lovely, forget it – your images are going to have a horrid, yellow tinge to them that no amount of Photoshop is going to save. My advice Mo (Mo’s the manager – lovely chap), change the bulbs – they’re not doing you any favours.
Of all the dishes, the Carpaccio was my favourite, followed by the lamb. The assiette of desserts was good too. I don’t think the poached peach and Perl Las cheese worked (a little too sweet after the dessert). Personally, it’s good to see that this has been replaced by pear for the next event in November (details below). Here’s the November menu…
