There’s a simple truth about steak night. If you’re going to do it, you’d better do it properly. Because steak is unforgiving. There’s nowhere to hide. No complicated sauces or clever plating to distract you. Just good beef, hot plates, and a kitchen who know exactly what they’re doing.
After Richard’s glowing review of The Fox’s Curry Night (click here), I felt compelled to try their Steak Night (I’m an unapologetic carnivore so needed no real persuasion).
At The Fox & Hounds in Llancarfan, Steak Night feels like the natural evolution of the great British pub tradition: honest food, well sourced ingredients, and a room full of people who came for one reason – something hearty and satisfying at the end of the day.
Mark, Jack and I arrived with the kind of appetite that only a proper pub menu can inspire. The plan was simple: lean into the steak but allow a little exploration around the edges. Jack, naturally, had other ideas.
Starting as you mean to go on…
The opening act came in the form of focaccia bread with salted butter (£4) – a small plate that set the tone immediately. Warm, soft, and perfect for tearing apart while conversation settles into the rhythm of the evening.
Then came the starters…
Crispy squid with lime, chilli and garlic mayo (£11) arrived golden and delicately crisp, the citrus and chilli cutting through the richness in exactly the way they should. No unnecessary fuss – just well-executed, satisfying pub food.
The standout, however, was the shredded lamb shoulder with winter pickles and herb dressing (£10). Deep, slow-cooked flavour from the lamb balanced by the sharpness of the pickles and the freshness of the herbs. It’s the kind of dish that tells you the kitchen is paying attention. It matters, and they were.
The main event
Jack veered confidently off course and ordered the double cheeseburger with burger sauce, lettuce, gherkin and fries (£17). A towering, unapologetic pub burger that looked exactly how you want a burger to look – messy, generous and impossible to eat neatly.
Meanwhile Mark and I stayed loyal to the mission.
The Strip Steak with chips and peppercorn sauce arrived exactly as the chef recommended. Mark took his cooked as suggested; I, being an unapologetic carnivore, went for mine super rare. This, to be fair, is a steal at £15.
And here’s where the Fox & Hounds earns its stripes.
Both steaks were cooked to perfection – a phrase used far too casually these days but genuinely deserved here. Proper sear on the outside, beautifully tender inside, and served on hot plates so the temperature held right through the meal. It sounds like a small detail, but anyone who loves steak knows how rare that has become.
The peppercorn sauce leaned more toward the rich depth of a gravy than the cream-heavy, additive-packed packet versions we’re often plied with. Mark said, “I could have sat with a boat of the gravy and a basket of their bread and butter near the fire and that would have been a perfectly enjoyable evening in itself.” Needless to say, the velvety gravy worked beautifully with the beef.
Chef also kindly accommodated my diet request, substituting the fries and sauce for a couple of perfectly fried eggs alongside the steak – simple, generous hospitality that makes all the difference.
No drama. No gimmicks. Just excellent steak, and great service.
Desserts and good coffee…
We rounded off the evening with the same desserts that have clearly become house favourites.
The Guinness and chocolate cake with mascarpone cream remains a quiet triumph – light, indulgent and beautifully balanced. (£9)
And the crème caramel with boozy prunes and biscuit again delivered that silky sweetness with just enough texture and depth to keep things interesting. (£9)
Good coffee followed, as all great meals should end.
The wine and spirits list was clearly expertly considered and covered all tastes. The prices weren’t astronomical either. If you want a great, affordable wine, The Fox can deliver. If you want to push the boat out, you most certainly can.
Service and atmosphere…
Service throughout the evening was relaxed, friendly and attentive.
Owen looked after us with warmth and humour, striking that perfect balance between professionalism and the easy conversation that makes a pub feel like a pub rather than a restaurant trying too hard.
The atmosphere was unmistakably country pub – comfortable, informal, welcoming.
A kitchen that knows what it’s doing…
It’s worth noting that the Fox & Hounds is owned by Adam, formerly of the highly regarded Bar 44 Group. Anyone familiar with that name will understand exactly why the food here is so confidently executed.
Adam clearly understands both sides of the hospitality equation: how to run a kitchen and how to make people feel welcome. And when those two things come together, good things happen.
The Vale Life verdict
Steak Night at The Fox & Hounds is exactly what you want it to be. Great beef, cooked properly. Thoughtful starters. Proper puddings. Friendly staff. And the reassuring feeling that they genuinely care about what they’re providing.
It’s the kind of night that reminds you why village pubs still matter.
And why, when the steak is cooked this well, you should keep coming back.
