Penarth ABC Boxes Clever In Bargoed

, / 3284

Penarth ABC was on its travels again in early December. This time coach, Neil Munn, and the team were travelling to Bargoed (north of Caerphilly in the Rhymney Valley).

Keiron McFarland was boxing Danny Tomsett of Bargoed ABC. Usually, Keiron always boxes lads about four to six inches taller, but Tomsett was the first boxer Keiron had fought who is the same height as him.

Keiron was told by coach Neil Munn to get his jab working, then to come through with his left hook, only if it was there, and that he wasn’t to rush his work. After about a minute Neil could see that Tomsett was a good, strong boxer, but he wasn’t punching hard enough to hurt Keiron and was wide open for a right hook.

When Keiron came back to the corner after the first round, Neil told Keiron that Tomsett wasn’t hitting hard enough to hurt him, and all that he wanted Keiron to do was to walk through Tomsett and to let his right hook and left hook go.

Keiron followed Neil’s advice, and Tomsett couldn’t cope at all. Keiron caught him with some tremendous right hook, left hook combinations – all from behind the jab, forcing the referee to give Tomsett a standing eight count. The referee told them to box on and Keiron did exactly the same thing making the referee stop the fight in the second round.

Neil is proud of what his boxers have achieved this season, “It’s been a great season for the club,” Neil says. “We’re building on the basics and the boxers are training hard. I’d like to see them get the recognition they deserve in the local press. There are too many negative things reported in the local papers and sometimes I feel they could concentrate on the great achievements of the young people doing positive things rather than the criminals and losers. A little more attention on boxing rather than the usual rugby, football and hockey would be much appreciated.”

There are plenty of fights through December for Penarth ABC’s boxers and Neil has high hopes for 2018.
