Local Heroes: Volunteer Beach Clean Group

You can look at the TV and moan about the state of the planet, or you can get out there and make a difference.

Established four years ago, back in the relative global calm of 2018, this fab group of now over 900 members grew from a germ of an idea by Trevor Mcgarrigle, the groups lead picker.

This happy band of litter pickers hold regular events up and down the Heritage Coast and do their level best to keep our gorgeous coast free of the washed up nasties that find their way onto our beaches.

Last weekend the Volunteer Beach Clean Group cleaned Monknash beach, but you’ll regularly find them in Gileston, Aberthaw, Llantwit Major and Ogmore – they do get about.

Trevor is extremely keen to thank all those who took part last weekend. “I would like to say a special thanks to all 26 volunteers who helped clean Monknash beach. We collected twelve bags of rubbish and a lot of larger plastics. We met new volunteers, everyone was amazing. It’s so satisfying knowing we are helping our local environment keeping all this rubbish off our beautiful coastline.”

A typical beach clean-up involves picking up lots of plastic, broken glass, tin cans, discarded fishing tackle and fishing nets. Occasionally, the group find drug paraphernalia and that’s particularly concerning, especially in summer time, when there are children playing on the beaches who perhaps don’t recognise the dangers of handling these items. Thank goodness Trevor and his team are out there making the coastline a little safer.

Next event…
If you want to get involved, the next beach clean is Llantwit Major beach on the 18th September, meeting at 1:30pm in the carpark.

If you want to meet like-minded people and do your bit for the Vale and the planet, there can be no more enjoyable way to spend a few hours. You’ll meet new friends, and the universe will always remember a good deed. It’s a win-win.
