The 4th of August will be a big day for many restaurants and especially Keyif, the rather brilliant Turkish restaurant in Penarth. I’m not going to lie, I’m a huge fan of Keyif so I will definitely be putting something in the diary for what I’m calling K-day.

Keyif has been one of the stars of the Covid-19 lockdown – staying open continuously when many restaurants have closed entirely. Owner Mehmet Yadiz says, “We stayed open because we wanted to ensure the people of Penarth had the opportunity to order our food. Penarth has been very good to us. It would have been very easy to close the doors and wait it out but there was no question – we would stay open no matter what, or unless the government requested we close.”

So what can we expect when we can dine inside from the 4th August? “All social distancing measures ares in place,” explains Mehmet. “We have sanitisers too – everything is as it should be!”

The announcement has been greeted with real enthusiasm locally with compliments plus many positive comments and good wishes on Keyif’s social channels.

I asked Mehmet about the reopening menu. “As you know, our range of foods consists of a variety of Mediterranean treats such as hummus, falafel and tabbouleh, alongside other Turkish delicacies like Acili Ezme and several varieties of kebab,” he says. “Customers love what we do and changing it would probably upset some of our many regulars so we don’t change too much.”

“Our favourites are always the lamb dishes and the salads. The flavours are incredible and the quality of food is hard to beat. I really love vegetables, although I’m not a vegetarian, and Keyif’s preparation of vegetable and salad dishes is excellent. Even my husband and son tuck in to the salads with enthusiasm. We’ve eaten in several Turkish restaurants around the UK and abroad, and Keyif is certainly up there in the top five. We are so fortunate to have a Turkish restaurant of this quality in the Vale.” Jennifer Hobbs-Roberts, Editor, Vale Life

Keyif is also gaining a bit of a reputation for its cocktails. We’re certainly fans and regularly partake. If you haven’t tried them, you really must. One warning, they’re so nice they can be just a little addictive.

The other thing I particularly love about Keyif is the service. Mehmet and his team are really lovely. They genuinely care that you enjoy your meal and that the ambience is just right.

So if you’re looking for a restaurant to try once dining-in is officially allowed from the 4th August, book yourself in to Keyif. You’ll make Mehmet’s day.
