You’ve probably already switched over your wardrobe from summer to autumn, putting away those bikinis and sarongs (we can’t travel anywhere anyway!) for jumpers, sandals for knee high boots and sun-kissed highlights for moodier, darker shades.

To help you get a jump start on your new hair colour, we asked Rhoose based cut and colourist Vanessa of Sublime Hair and Beauty for her best bets for autumn. From honey browns favoured by the likes of Beyonce to The Megan – sultry, rich, chocolate brown hue; your next dye job awaits.

As temperatures cool down, hair colours are transitioning to darker, warmer, richer, and icier shades. Here are the top five hair colour trends for autumn/winter, incorporating some of this year’s most popular tones and techniques.

Winter Hair Colour Trend #1: Cinnamon Hair
Clients have been requesting all shades of red this year, and cinnamon hair is the latest trend to take off! Whether you create a copper or auburn reflect, this versatile red-brown colour is guaranteed to add some spice this season.

Winter Hair Colour Trend #2: Chocolate Cake Hair
Rich cocoa tones are the secret to the luscious, low maintenance trend that is chocolate cake hair. Balayage is the perfect technique for this look, with hand painted pieces providing a touch of warmth.

Winter Hair Colour Trend #3: Plum Hair
While lilac hair took over our feeds last year, it’s now making way for a moodier purple hue. Plum hair is a deep violet shade that’s both striking and subtle. Ideal for clients with a brunette base and warm undertones, a signature feature of this look is its glossy finish.

Winter Hair Colour Trend #4: Ice Blonde Hair
A departure from the deeper tones of the season, winter frost serves as the inspiration for this bright white look. Ice blonde hair eliminates all gold tones for a pure platinum result. High contrast hair is also trending right now, so incorporating a root shadow will keep this cool toned colour looking chic for longer.

Winter Hair Colour Trend #5: Tiger Eye Hair
Named after the crystal, tiger eye hair features deeper roots with bronze, brown, caramel and gold tones through the mid-lengths and ends. With chunky highlights and multidimensional brunettes gaining popularity this year, this look delivers the best of both.

As you can imagine, these looks can’t be achieved with box colours from your local supermarket.” says Vanessa. “During Covid especially, we have seen lots of clients come in with botched die jobs because they couldn’t get to their salon for professional help. With lockdown easing, we can repair any damage done but also, hopefully, suggest the perfect colour solution for our clients, whether it’s a touch up or re-colour of their existing shade or a totally new look for the autumn/winter. We are here to help.”
