We’ve been asking residents of the Vale Of Glamorgan what life is like under the government imposed Covid-19 lockdown. Here we chat to Aly Wiltshire from Barry.

Aly Wiltshire Tai Chi BarryWhat do you do for a living?
I am a receptionist at a doctors’ surgery.

Can you work? Are you having to work right now?
Yes, I can work in the surgery at the moment with social distancing, however I will be working remotely using my laptop and mobile phone, which are being linked into the surgery systems as of next week.

If you are staying at home, what are you doing to keep yourself occupied? How are you coping?
I work three days a week, which at the best of times can be stressful in a very busy surgery, the emotional stress is far greater now, so at home I practice Tai Chi and meditation so I can manage my stress levels. The rest of the time I help where I can with the care of elderly parents who have varying degrees of dementia.

Do you find the situation stressful?
I do worry that certain people are not taking the situation seriously – that I find stressful as they are risking our safety.

What are your overall thoughts about the pandemic?
I find the situation completely surreal. It’s frightening the speed at which Covid-19 has spread, the uncertainty of when this will end is very unsettling, I’m a very positive person normally but I’m struggling to understand what the future holds for my children and grandchildren

Do you have older family members? Are they reliant on you for anything?
Yes, they rely on me for shopping, medication, and also company, albeit from a distance.

How do you think this pandemic will change us when things calm down (for better or for worse)?
I’m hoping that it will change us for the better, not being so selfish and expecting everything to be available immediately. People have been quite demanding in their requirements of late, but in general I have seen a change in some people’s attitudes – that has to be a positive surely.
